Fernando Torres was selected in the FIFA/FIFPro World XI in the FIFA World Player Gala 2009 which took place at Zurichs Kongresshaus on Monday. This years Gala included two new awards, the FIFA/FIFPro World XI and the FIFA Pusks Award and the Liverpool and Spain number 9 was in the running for both accolades.

The striker was named in the World dream team which honoured the best eleven players of the year as chosen by over 50,000 professional football players from all over the world.

The Liverpool and Spain number 9 was selected in a side which also featured Iker Casillas (Real Madrid/Spain), Daniel Alves (Barcelona/Brazil), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United/Serbia), John Terry (Chelsea/England) and Patrice Evra (Manchester United/France), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool/England), Xavi (Barcelona/Spain) and Andres Iniesta (Barcelona/Spain), Lionel Messi (Barcelona/Argentina) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid/Portugal).

The FIFA Pusks Award was created in honour and in memory of Hungarian footballer Ferenc Pusks. The newly created accolade for the most beautiful goal during the past year was awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo for his goal for Manchester United in last seasons UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against FC Porto.

Fernando Torres strike against Blackburn Rovers on 11 April was selected by a panel of FIFA experts as one of the top ten beautiful goals of the year. The Spaniards superb volley in the Premier League clash at Anfield against Rovers was voted Liverpools goal of the season for 2008/2009.

After finishing on the podium last year, Torres was one of 23 players originally shortlisted for the 2009 FIFA World Player award. This year however the prize was scooped by Lionel Messi, who finished ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Xavi.
