Fernando Torres, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta. These are the names of Jean Pierre Papin’s three favourites for the 2009 Ballon d’Or. Three players who recently made France Football’s shortlist.

Of the three players, the Liverpool striker, who came third in the voting last year, is the ex-French international’s personal favourite for the prestigious award, largely thanks to Torres’ “extraordinary performances and decisive goals.”

Speaking on L’Equipe TV, the 1991 Ballon d’Or winner believes that “you cannot rule out Torres. He’s capable of producing extraordinary performances and scoring decisive goals. Liverpool are not the same team without him.”

Jean Pierre Papin is one of France’s footballing legends. At club level the striker played for Vichy, Valenciennes, Club Brugge, Olympique Marseille, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Bordeaux and Guningamp.

Papin won the Champions League with AC Milan in the 1993/1994 season, an UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich in 1995/1996, four French League titles, one French Cup, two Italian Leagues, one Italian Super Cup and one Belgian Cup. During his career Jean Pierre played 494 games scoring 228 goals. The forward also played 54 games with France scoring 30 goals.
