More than 3.3 million votes were cast by users over five weeks in the search to find UEFA’s team of 2008. Fernando Torres, who fired Spain to victory in the European Championships, was the only out and out striker to make the starting eleven. The ‘UEFA Team of the Year’ has been an annual feature since 2001 with over 15 million votes having been cast in previous polls. Fans selected their star player from a list of 60 nominees and coaches who had shone during the past 12 years.

The Euro 2008 winners dominated voting with Iker Casillas in goal, Sergio Ramos in the right-back position, Carles Puyol at centre-back, Xavi Hernandez and Cesc Fabregas in the middle of the park, and with Fernando Torres in attack.

Fellow podium finishers from France Football’s Golden Ball and FIFA’s World Player awards also made the team with Ronaldo on the left-wing and Messi up front alongside Torres.

The Liverpool striker fought off competition from Del Piero, Ibrahimovic, Agüero, Villa, Güiza, Benzema, Rooney and Adebayor for a place in the team of the year.
