Fernando Torres overcame an ankle injury to help the Reds to the last eight of the Champions League with the opening goal of Liverpool’s emphatic 4-0 win over Real Madrid at Anfield. Steve Gerrard added the Merseysiders’ second from the spot before crashing home a Babel cross two minutes into the second-half. Dossena rounded-off the scoring with a right-footed strike at the death.

After missing the Red’s Premier League win over Sunderland, the Liverpool number ‘9’ returned to the starting line-up for the return-leg versus Real Madrid. Alvaro Arbeloa also made a speedy recovery from injury, as Ryan Babel replaced the suspended Albert Riera on the left-hand side of midfield.

With less than five minutes gone on the clock, the Real Madrid shot-stopper pulled off an excellent save to deny Torres. The Liverpool forward flicked the ball past Cannavaro, but there was Iker Casillas on-hand to save with an outstretched leg as the forward looked to finish low into the corner.

The Spain number one then pushed a Mascherano drive onto the crossbar as Liverpool created chance after chance. Real Madrid were living dangerously as the home side dominated the opening exchanges.

The Reds though didn’t have to wait long for the opener. Fernando Torres hustled Pepe who slipped and lost possession in his own area. The ball broke kindly for Dirk Kuyt who squared for Spaniard to slot home from close range.

A header from Martin Skrtel almost added a second for a rampant Liverpool side, but Iker Casillas was equal to the defender’s effort, diving low to his right to push the ball away.

Fernando Torres was running the Real Madrid back-line ragged as his cross was met by Steve Gerrard, but the captain’s volley was punched away by Casillas.

Liverpool eventually doubled their advantage after 28 minutes as Gerrard scored from the spot. Heinze was penalised for handball and the club captain made not mistake.

Very little changed after the restart as Liverpool made it 3-0 with the second-half barely underway. Steve Gerrard volleyed a Babel cross past a helpless Casillas in the away goal.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper had to fly across his goal to save from Gerrard as Liverpool continued to surge forward, not content it seems with the 3-0 scoreline.

Gago and Raul both had efforts fly wide as Real Madrid tried to claw their way back into the game, but it was Iker Casillas at the other end who had to brilliantly save from Fernando Torres. The forward’s curling effort look destined for the top corner, but Spanish keeper got across goal just in time to palm the ball away.

With just under 10 minutes remaining Rafa Benitez decided to make his final substitution brining on Dossena for Fernando Torres. The forward, who had made an excellent comeback after injury, left the pitch to a standing ovation from home fans.

There was still time for one last goal as Dossena finished off a Liverpool break two minutes from time to round-off another magic night of European football at Anfield.
