Torres grabs his third of the season in Red’s 3-2 victory at Bolton

Liverpool came back from behind twice to beat Bolton Wanderers 3-2 at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday. Fernando Torres grabbed the Merseysiders’ second of the afternoon before setting up teammate Steve Gerrard for the winner. The victory leaves the Reds mid-table with six points from four games.

Rafa Benitez made two changes to the Liverpool team that lost to Aston Villa as new signing Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Albert Riera were brought in for Martin Skrtel and Yossi Benayoun.

It was a slow start for both sides with chances few and far between. Glen Johnson almost found Fernando Torres at the far post, but the defender’s cross just evaded the Spaniard’s dive.

Cahill became the first player to go into the referee’s book after a crunching late tackle on Torres. The good news for the Reds was that the forward was able to get back to his feet without requiring treatment.

As against Tottenham and Aston Villa, Liverpool were undone once again from a set-piece. The home side took the lead just after the half hour mark with their first effort on goal. A corner was knocked back across goal by Johan Elmander for an unmarked Kevin Davies to knock past Reina.

Bolton’s goal seemed to bring Liverpool to life as the Reds enjoyed their best spell of the first-half. Riera and Torres drilled just wide before Johnson drew the visitors level. The full-back cut inside his man before unleashing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

With just two minutes gone in the second-half Gary Megson’s side regained the lead. A Kevin Davies flick on bounced kindly for Tamir Cohen who shot into the far corner.

On 54 minutes Wanderers were reduced to ten men as Davis was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Lucas Leiva.

Liverpool were almost level a minute later as Steve Gerrard struck the bar after a Red corner was only half cleared by Bolton.

The Merseysiders didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser as Fernando Torres slotted home his third goal of the season. The Spaniard collected a Kuyt pass in the box before beating Jaaskelainen at the far post.

The final quarter was one-way traffic as the home side got everyone behind the ball in an attempt to hold on for a point. The breakthrough finally came seven minutes from time. Fernando Torres headed a cross into the path of Gerrard who crashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Fernando Torres almost grabbed his second and Liverpool’s fourth of the afternoon following a great move from the Reds. A series of slick passes found Voronin who crossed for the Spaniard at the far post. Unfortunately for the Merseysiders, Torres’ shot was clawed off the line by Jaaskelainen.

Rafa Benitez’ side held on for all three points to notch up their second win of the season. The Liverpool number ‘9’ will now join the Spain ahead for the World Cup qualifiers versus Belgium and Estonia.

Liverpool next return to action in the Premier League against newly promoted Burnley at Anfield on Saturday 12, kick-off at 15:00 hours (BST).
