Fernando Torres has lent his support to UNICEF’s campaign ‘Score a goal for life’ to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by children in Africa. Just a few days before the first World Cup in the African continent kicks-off, UNICEF will put on sale thousands of mini-footballs to raise funds for their new campaign. The balls, which can be bought for 10 euros, will also be on sale in Itlay, France and Portugal.

The Spain number nine is joined by Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez, as the two footballers promote UNICEF’s campaign ahead of South Africa 2010. As part of the campaign, players from Spain’s La Liga will be signing UNICEF’s footballs at promotional events across the country.

UNICEFFernando Torres has worked with UNICEF in the past. The forward helped promote a recipe book, which contained a series of personal recipes selected by stars from all walks of life.

Sport plays a key part in UNICEF’s campaigns and work worldwide. Sport teaches several key values like teamwork, solidarity, and respect for rules. In many countries where poverty, disease and war reign, sport and especially football, help children to have fun, bond and to develop social, emotional and physical skills.

The mini-footballs can be bought at Imaginarium, el Corte Inglés, InterSport, Forum Sport, and at all of UNICEF’s shops across Spain. And for those of you who don’t live in Spain, Itlay, France or Portugal, or prefer to shop on line, the ball is also available at UNICEF’s official website: www.tienda.unicef.es.
