Anfield to host six-pointer as Reds met Spurs in rearranged league match

19-01-2010

Liverpool will be looking to close the gap on fourth place when they face Tottenham at Anfield on Wendnesday kick-off at 20:00 hours (GMT). The rearranged Premier League game, which was originally scheduled for January 10, and was postponed due to bad weather, hands the Reds the ideal opportunity to move just a point behind Spurs in their pursuit for a Champions League spot. - Premier League Table -

Rafa Benitez will still be without the injured Fernando Torres, Steve Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun for the visit of Tottenham. The Spain international is recovering following a successful operation on his injured right knee which took place in Barcelona on Saturday.

The Reds go into Sunday’s all-important Premier League clash in seventh place, four points adrift of Spurs who lie fourth on 38 points, having played the same number of games as Liverpool. Harry Redknapp’s side are enjoying one of their best seasons in the Premier League and the Londoners are unbeaten in their last six games.

The two teams met on the opening day of the 2009/10 season as Tottenham beat the Reds 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

The last meeting between the two clubs at Anfield took place on the final day of the last campaign. Liverpool ran-out 3-1 winners with strikes from Fernando Torres, Yossi Benayoun, plus an own goal from Tottenham player Alan Hutton. Former Red forward Robbie Keane scored Spurs’ consolation goal.

Recent history on Merseyside favours the home side. Spurs have not won away at Anfield in the league since August 1993, with Liverpool winning 11 and drawing 5, since the league loss 16 years ago.

Following the game at home to Tottenham, the Reds will rest at the weekend due to fourth round of the FA Cup. Liverpool’s next match will be away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday 26 January.
