Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to collect their first win of the festive period. The Reds were made to work hard for all three points by the visitors, but both Benayoun and Gerrard got on the scoresheet with goals in the 62nd and 69th minute. - Premier League Table -

Fernando Torres was named in the starting XI and went on to play the entire contest on a cold evening on Merseyside. The Spaniard was deployed as a lone forward with Steve Gerrard playing just behind the striker. Torres had the ball in the back of the net on half an hour, lofting the ball over Hahnemann in the Wolves goal, but his strike was ruled out for offside.

Liverpool FC - WolvesAquilani started his first Premier League match as the hosts took the game to the visitors. The Liverpool number ‘9’ wriggled free inside the box and tested the Wolverhampton keeper with a fierce shot which Hahnemann did well to tip over.

Wolves, with three wins in their last four league outings, slowly grew in confidence and created chances of their own. Pepe Reina saved form Stearman before an unmarked Kevin Doyle missed the target from only three yards out.

Torres, Gerrard and Aquilani were linking up well but Mick McCarthy’s side were looking very solid at the back. Hahnemann denied Johnson just before the break as both sides went in at the break level.
Wolves were reduced to ten-man when Ward was sent off early in the second half. The left-back was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Lucas Leiva. The defender had earlier picked-up a booking for a tug on Benayoun.

Liverpool FC - WolvesGerrard soon made the one man advantage count. Insua picked-out the captain’s run with a fine cross and the skipper powered a header past the Wolves keeper. Seven minutes later Benayoun gave Liverpool breathing space. The midfielder found space in the box and his left-foot shot deflected off Karl Henry and into the back of the net.

Liverpool were now firmly in control as the visitors failed to test Reina. Rafa Benitez’ men played-out a comfortable final 20 minutes to collect three vital points as they moved up to seventh, five points behind third-placed Arsenal and fourth-placed Aston Villa who meet on Sunday.

The next Premier League match for the Reds will be a six-pointer, as Liverpool travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa on December 29.
