Great win by Atlético de Madrid over FC Bayern and superb display by Fernando Torrres on another famous Wednesday night at Vicente Calderón. Red-and-whites got the most of Carrasco’s goal in the first half but it is a narrow result considering the high-level performance displayed by the home side. It was enough opportunities to get a bigger result -a header by Torres to the post included- but the left-footed drive by the Belgian was enough to keep all three points safe at home.

Fernando Torres was on the starting eleven for this big-gun fixture, the first high-level challenge in Champions League this season. He displayed a great performance up front in the first half with a header to the right post and a left-footed strike to the side among a wide catalogue of movements and runs to get the most of spaces behind the back line, specially on the second half.

Five months later, Atlético was face to face with Bayern at the Calderón. In April, to play the semi-final of this tournament, and now to open the season in this group stage in the red and white coliseum. Simeone’s team stood up to the Germans from minute one and after a first warning from Müller, our players went all out for Bayern. Carrasco and Torres warned, the later with a header that hit the post until the Belgian scored his superb goal after a good assist from Griezmann.

In the second half, the Germans were not happy with the result and a tough Atlético appeared, which did not allow the Bavarians to create clear danger. And if the time came, Oblak was there to save it. Just as on 56’ to a finish from Alaba. Later, to chances from the Germans with shots from Lewandovsky, Ribéry and Robben that went wide. But always with a dangerous Atlético each time it played in Neuer’s area. And then came the penalty of Vidal on Filipe Luis in the 83rd minute that Griezmann crashed on the crossbar. In the end, the history of last season repeated itself and our team won a very important victory against one of the largest teams in Europe.
