Emotional farewell to Torres: “You make me feel the most loved player in the world”
Atletico Madrid paid tribute to club legend Fernando Torres after the striker brought down the curtain on his Red-and-white career with a double against Eibar. Torres came from the Atleti Academy to the first team in 2001, leaving the club for Liverpool in 2007 before returning to Vicente Calderon in 2015.
And, having captained the side and netting his 128th and 129th goals respectively on his final appearance in the 2-2 draw, Torres received a guard of honour from his team-mates and coaching staff at the culmination of Sunday's clash at Wanda Metropolitano.
An official farewell followed, with a highlight video of Torres' best moments for Atleti preceding speeches from numerous club dignitaries, and the presentation of a commemorative shirt and shield celebrating the Spaniard's 404 appearances for the club.
The full Torres-Sanz family came onto the pitch and walked ahead to Fernando, while the Striker started an emotional speech to all the people at Wanda Metropolitano stadium and all the Red-and-white fans all over the world.
“I want to say thanks to a lot of people. Sorry in advance for those who are not mentioned on these words, as there are a lot of people who have helped me. I want to start with the people who are in the third stand (passed away), specially two. Luis Aragonés, because he showed us the right way. And my grandfather, because he gave me the biggest gift a grandpa can give to his grandchild: to make me an Atletico’s fan”.
“Also I would like to say ‘thank you’ to my family, of course. To my mother, as she always was with me when we use to go training by train day by day, while I was doing my homework. She did a lot of sacrifices, like a lot of mothers do, to make her child’s dreams come true. Thank you, mum. To my father for his example, for not missing a single game, for teaching me the same values that Atletico taught me years after. Thank you for letting me choose and fail, as I could then learn from my own mistakes. Thank you, dad. To my siblings, as they spent their money to buy me those football boots that I wanted to have. To my brother Isra, because of him I like football and maybe why the reason we all are here today. To my sister Paz as she used to stop studying for two hours a week to watch my matches. She has always supported me and taught me how important the dedication is. I love you both so much”.
“I’m grateful to my wife, as she has been a strong base in my life, she has given me peace and balance. She has always been in the right place, where I could go to when I needed mostly. She taught me how to love and value myself in the hardest moments and keep humble in victories. She has always supported all my decisions without any condition. And above all she has given me three children, three treasures who teach us how to be better parents and persons too. Of course we have three Atlético fans more with us. I love you all 4 so much, you are my life”.
“Also I would like to say thank you to that people who gave advise to me. They had been there since I was 17. They know well who they are. Thanks to my teammates, medical staff, coaches, and all that people that help us every weekend and who do an indispensable work. The last three years had been fantastic. I have had the chance to be back to the team I’ve always dreamed. I would choose this crew above any other, for everything. And I’m proud of having been a part of it, so thank you all. From all of you I have learnt something, I hope I’ve taught you something too. Those are the most gratifying words I can hear. I am sure that we will reach all we want and deserve. This group of people had gain less than it deserve by far and you are in charge of getting over it.
“Finally thanks to all the Atlético family. I’ve never needed a trophy to make me feel the most loved player in the world. I’ve always known that doing whatever I did I could not give back to you so much love. I’ve had the privilege of wearing this shirt for more than 400 games. It’s very hard to realise that this is the end. I would like that all of you remember forever how it feels today. People ask us why we are Atlético fans, or why Atlético de Madrid is different. When we say that they can’t understand how it feels, that we can’t explain it, I would like you to remember how we feel today: with the happiness of being champions, proud of your players. That feeling is Atleti. And that’s why it can’t be explained through words. You have to feel it".
"When hard times come, when from outside somebody want to separate us and say that things are not going well, in the bad moments that will come for sure… I would like you to feel how we feel today. The pride you are feeling. We all are just one. And at last I will ask you to sing our anthem, beacuse it is the most beautiful song in the world”.
