Everton beat Chelsea 4-3 on penalties after the fourth round FA Cup replay had ended 1-1 after extra-time. After a scoreless 90 minutes, a goal from Frank Lampard on 104 minutes looked to have won the FA Cup replay at Stamford Bridge. But a free-kick from Baines one minute before the final whistle sent the game into penalties.

Baines had his penalty saved by Cech, but misses from Anelka and Cole left Neville with the chance to send Everton through to the next round. The defender made no mistake from the spot, beating the Chelsea keeper with a shot into the top corner.

Fernando Torres, who was cup-tied for the match after appearing for Liverpool against Manchester United, watched the contest from the stands. The Spaniard was sat alongside former Red teammate Benayoun.

It was a positive start from Everton as Leon Osman tested Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal with a low shot from 20 yards out.

Chelsea’s best chance of the first-half fell to John Terry. A Lampard free-kick was deflected onto his own post by Phil Jagielka, and Terry with the follow-up from eight yards out failed to find the target.

Florent Malouda was denied twice by good saves from Tim Howard. The American saved at the Frenchman’s feet 10 yards out after he had blocked an earlier effort from Malouda.

Osman and Baines were looking dangerous for the visitors. The two attack-minded players were consistently getting the ball into the Chelsea box, but the home side dealt with the threat comfortably.

A free-kick from Drogba from a full 40 yards out almost caught out Howard who had to dive across goal to push the ball away from danger.

The Blues had a couple of opportunities to take the lead midway through the second-half as Lampard drove wide from the edge of the area and Drogba fired marginally over.

The Londoners were still pressing and with ten minutes remaining Lampard chipped over the bar from inside the box.

The Toffees almost nicked it in the last minute of normal time, but Fellaini was adjudged to have been in an off-side position before shooting past Cech.

The first period of extra-time saw Chelsea clearly on top. The home side’s pressure finally paid off just before half-time of extra-time. A cross from Anelka was chested by Drogba into the path of Lampard, who beat Howard from seven yards out.

The Londoners were just seconds away from victory but a goal from Everton sent the game into penalties. A Baines floated free-kick flew over the wall and into the back of the net.

The west Londoners started the shoot-out well as Lampard scored the home side’s first spot-kick. Chelsea then took an early advantage as Cech saved from Baines. Drogba rolled the ball to Howard’s left to make it 2-0 to the Blues. Jagielka pulled a goal back for Everton and then Howard saved from Anelka. Atreta levelled the contest up with the visitor’s third penalty. Essien blasted his attempt straight down the middle before Heitinga scored with a penalty into the bottom corner. Everton were handed a chance to knock-out the holders as Cole fired Chelsea’s fifth penalty over the bar. Neville duly converted the Merseysiders’ fifth spot-kick to send Everton into the next round.
