The Reds maintained top spot in the Premiership with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth at Anfield courtesy of a Steve Gerrard penalty. With Liverpool’s league clash versus Tottenham and their Champions League match versus Atletico Madrid on the horizon, Rafael Benitez decided to leave Fernando Torres out of the clash versus Pompey.

The Premier League leaders started strongly at home to Portsmouth with a shot from inside the area by Dirk Kuyt over the bar, before the Dutch striker had a shot brilliantly pushed onto the post by David James.

Xabi Alonso then had a shot from the edge of the area fly just wide of the upright as Liverpool dominated the opening 45 minute period.

The second half was very quiet affair with neither side testing the rival keeper. However this all changed when the referee blew for a penalty in the Portsmouth area after Papa Bouba Diop handled in the box. Steve Gerrard stepped-up to put Liverpool in front.

According to Rafa Benitez, Fernando Torres, who is recovering well from his hamstring injury, could be back in contention for the Merseysiders’ next game away to Spurs.
