Liverpool will be hoping to bounce back from their midweek FA Cup disappointment when they take on Pompey at Fratton Park, kick off at 17:30 hours (GMT). A solitary goal two minutes from the end of extra-time condemned ten-man Liverpool to a fourth round defeat against Everton. Rafa Benitez’ side however suffered a further blow after a scan revealed the club captain, who limped off after 16 minutes, will be out of action for three weeks with a torn hamstring.

Pompey’s cup exploits were also ended in the fourth round. Championship side Swansea City knocked out FA Cup holders at Fratton Park in the biggest cup upset of the day.

Fernando Torres, the Reds two goal hero from last weekend’s league win over Chelsea, will be aiming to shoot Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League, albeit for only a few hours, as Manchester United don't play until Sunday.

Portsmouth will probably line-up with three familiar faces as ex-Reds Peter Crouch, who joined Pompey before the last campaign, Djimi TRAORE and goalkeeper David James are all first team regulars. Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant also joined the coastal club on loan until the end of the season but is ineligible to play.

The coastal club are just one point off third from bottom Blackburn Rovers. The bottom half of the Premier League is a very tight affair with eleven teams separated by just six points- basement side WBA are on 22 points with tenth placed Manchester City on 28 points. A poor run, with just two wins in 15 league games since Harry Redknapp left to take over at Spurs, has seen Portsmouth slide towards the Premier League relegation zone.

Tony Adams’ team could also welcome back captain Sol Campbell from injury, while Pompey’s two new Greek signings Angelos Basinas and Theofanis Gekas could make their Portsmouth debuts.

Portsmouth were founded in 1898 and reached the FA Premier League after winning the First Division in 2003. Last season Pompey lifted the FA Cup beating Cardiff 1-0 at Wembley.

The two teams have met 57 times in the league with Portsmouth collecting 19 wins to Liverpool’s 23; with the remaining 15 games ending in a draw. At Portsmouth the home team have beaten the Reds on 15 wins occasions, losing 8, with 5 games ending in a stalemate.

This season’s reverse fixture ended in a 1-0 win for Liverpool with Gerrard scoring from the spot; Torres missed the clash through injury. Last season’s meeting at Fratton Park finished all-square as both sides fought out a 0-0 draw.

The Anfield club go into the clash with Portsmouth two points behind defending champions Manchester United, who have played a game less. The Premier League leaders face in-form West Ham at Upton Park on Sunday.
