The second big title for Fernando Torres came after the Under 19 European Tournament. A year before Spain were celebrating the Under-16 crown in England and in July 2002 it was the turn for the next step forward. Norway was the scenario of the tournament. The Spanish team reached the final against Germany and Torres was again -as he did in Sunderland- the single scorer of the game, get the Golden Boot (4 goals) and was awarded as the Best Player of the Tournament.

Fernando Torres en Noruega 2002It was not place for a semifinal round under a new format. Spain and Germany were group Champions with two wins and a draw each one to reach a place in the final, played at Ullevaal Stadion (Oslo). On July the 28th Torres was the hero for Spain scoring a great goal after a perfect assist by Iniesta. Wearing the number 14 on his shirt the Madrid-born striker broke the deadlock with some of his well-known skills: pace, power and faith to fight for the ball.

This is how things run that day in Torres’ own words: “I missed out on my holidays because of the tournament, but I really wanted to play. It was more or less the same team as in the under-16s, and we were pretty confident. We started with a draw but after that we won all our games and were European Champions again. I was top scorer again and also voted best player for the second time. These personal awards really make you feel proud. I remember, in the hotel, after each game, looking at the boards with the points given for each player and the goals scored.. During the tournament I saw that I was there or thereabouts, that I was in with a chance of coming top, that I was playing well and getting a lot of points and at the end of the Championship, still on the pitch I heard over the loudspeaker that I’d been named Player of the Tournament as well as being top scorer, I was so happy. From then on my reputation grew and clubs were interested in me again, but at the very top level this time”.
