National team coach Vicente Del Bosque named Fernando Torres in his list for the Confederations Cup in South Africa. In a press conference held on Monday at the Spanish Federation’s headquarters, the manager called-up a total of 23 players for the event which will run from June 14 – June 28.

The current European Champions, who will be vying for the trophy along with Brazil, Italy, Egypt, Iraq, New Zealand, USA and hosts South Africa, will be taking part in the tournament for the first time.

The Confederations Cup is contested by the host country, the World Cup winners and the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships (CAF, CONMEBOL, UEFA, AFC, OFC, CONCACAF).

Spain qualified for the summer competition following their 1-0 win over Germany in the 2008 European Championship final. A goal from Fernando Torres was enough to separate the teams as the country tasted title glory for the first time in 44 years.
