Atletico closer to King’s Cup last eight as Torres debuts with a derby win over Real Madrid (2-0)

07-01-2015

The Atlético squad beat Real Madrid in the first leg of the round of 16. The King's Cup returned to the Vicente Calderón in the best possible way, with a valuable win over city rival and title holders Real Madrid and watching Fernando Torres playing again for Red-and-white side on the starting eleven.

In the first minute of play, Oblak pulled out a providential hand to prevent a header by Sergio Ramos from becoming the first goal of the game. After the initial start came the first chance of Simeone’s team. Griezmann outran Madrid’s defenders and only a stretch from Keylor Navas prevented the goal. As time went by, Atlético grew on the pitch to dominate the match. Raúl García came close to beating the visitor's goalie, but Marcelo’s right foot prevented it a few meters away from the goal line.

The second half began with an exchange of blows in which our team was the first to strike. After a warning from Griezmann, Raúl García converted on a penalty committed by Sergio Ramos on the playmaker from Navarra. The second goal of the game came after a shot from Giménez from a corner bounced by Gabi that went into the goal of Real Madrid.
