Torres hits 100-goal landmark in Spanish top-flight to make happen a perfect Children’s Day (3-0)

15-04-2018

Great Sunday evening at Wanda Metropolitano. Atlético de Madrid signed a comfortable win in the Children’s Day promoted by the Club and did it through the goals by Correa, Griezmann and Fernando Torres. The number nine reached the 100th goal landmark in Spain top-flight, and also stepped up to fifth spot on the goalscorers ranking of the Red-and-whites in history (127 goals). So it was the ice on the cake for a nice week after qualification for Europa League semifinals on midweek. -LaLiga Santander Table-

“From child to legend” was the caption waving on a big banner in the stand as it was the first home game after Fernando Torres confirmed his departure from boyhood club at the end of the season. The tribute from fans was followed by a great performance by Torres on the second half, as he came onto the pitch replacing Griezmann (58’). Fernando connected a right-footed drive after a perfect Correa’s cross from the right side of the box to move up the score to 3-0.

The match started off well for the home side, as locals dominated possession and slowly began to create chances. The first big opportunity of the match ended up being the first goal of the afternoon. Correa took advantage of a great pass by Vitolo to create space and the send the ball to the back of the net.

Just a few minutes into the second half, Šime Vrsaljko sent a lovely first time cross to Griezmann. The Frenchman sent the ball flying into the top corner and the Wanda Metropolitano went wild.

Torres, who came on for Griezmann in the 58th minute, scored the third and final goal of the match in the 77th minute. With this goal, he scored his 127th for the club and is now number five in our club's top goalscorers.
