Torres signs off in style: goal and win at Nigeria (2-3)

22-05-2018

Fernando Torres hit the back of the net in his final appearance for Atletico Madrid, a 3-2 victory over a Nigeria Xl at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The Atletico legend played a 45 minutes performance on the second half netting the second goal -and last ever- for Red-and-whites.

He received a warm welcome from the stands as an outstanding ovation could be heard every time he touched the ball and, of course, when he made the 1-2 with a superb header from a corner kick by Correa. Good vibrations for the next season are guaranteed.

It may have only been a friendly but Jan Oblak was ready to work hard in the Atletico goal and made several important blocks against Kadiri.

The Nigerians were clearly motivated against the Europa League champions and the Maastricht striker Kelechi Nwakali put them ahead before Atletico responded with several chances but Gameiro fired wide and Angel Correa saw his shot saved by Fermi Thomas.

Correa did bring the teams level and then he was the provider for Torres to get on the scoresheet with a header.

The home side went back ahead with Usman scoring after a mazy run but Atletico youngster Borja Garces settled the game with a powerful shot.
